Faith and Art

Since as far back as I can remember I have loved cartoons and comics. Trying from a young age to create my own characters and story lines based on things I had seen. My older brother was also a big inspiration to me. I could see that he was really good at drawing and that he was into the same kind of artwork as me. In-fact it was him who introduced me to 2000 AD and my favourite comic book hero ‘Judge Dread’.

It wasn’t until I was in my late twenties that I became a born again Christian and began to take my art in a different direction.

It was 2007 and I was and I was just beginning my walk of faith when a friend of mine asked me to draw a picture for a CD he was making. He was a Christian Hip-Hop artist, who rapped about Christ. This was the perfect project to get me started. I drew a picture entitled ‘Listen Up’. It depicted a character (based on the Hip-Hop Artist) going up an escalator trying to tell the people on the other side about Christ.

This became the start of a series of paintings I made as I was finding out about Christianity and what it meant to be a Christian. I had found a great way to fuse my love for comics, Hip-Hop and Christ together in a way that help me to understand this new culture I was now part of. Over the years I developed more ideas based on Bible scripture and sermons. I have made several original hand made posters about my faith, using my artwork to express my understanding of what I had learnt.

I see this as the deeply personal side of Natty Art U. I am glad to able to share my faith in this way and present the Gospel in my own unique way.
